Simplicity and Structure
in Urban Architecture
...built in the popular International Style. While the architectural team has updated the story of the building, they have done so without compromising the distinct features that define its era's roots.
The architects have preserved the geometry of the original design while creating a cool new "urban village" style of architecture that fits perfectly into the overall master plan for this one-of-a-kind community at the heart of Shops at Don Mills. The building has been transformed into a dynamic and contemporary loft residence by infilling the iconic precast piers with expansive windows and subtle highlights of colour. One of the most interesting features of the retrofit is the creation of a double-height lobby that virtually plumes skyward supported by finger-like concrete columns that band the buildings' exterior.
The newly designed building provides extensive windows and 10 foot ceiling heights that create verticality of space; plus as hybrid lofts, original exposed ductwork expresses authenticity the ultimate in cool urban design.
There are many advantages of retrofit construction over new construction. Primarily timing and efficiency; the construction of a retrofit is generally much quicker to complete while new condominium construction can take several years.
Then, of course, there is the fact that the building actually exists. The developer is able to provide you with actual views from your suite and you are able to get a realistic idea of the spaces based on actuality rather than interpretation. A retrofit delivers all the charm and character of an older home, while pairing it with all of the bells and whistles of new home construction!
